The Start and The End

Objective: To provide an overview of the beginning and end of a training program

Reading duration: 2 minutes

We have a general thinking in our society: "Education begins in the cradle and ends with death." While it cannot be denied, "training" has a different connotation altogether. Education or learning is a lifelong process whereas every piece of training is organized with one or few objectives to be accomplished.

The training we are talking about are the ones that are organized by the businesses with an aim to up-skill their workforce.

The start of the training development program is triggered by various factors. Following are some of the examples:
  • Business is not happy with the productivity of a process. It wants to achieve higher level of productivity to make the process profitable.
  • Business wants to up-skill the workforce with new technology or processes to stay relevant in the market.
  • A new system or process has been introduced across the business and it is so required that the workforce be trained to get well-versed with the new aspects.
  • There has been a change in the existing process. The affected workforce needs to be made aware of the changes.
Once it is triggered, a Training Need Analysis (which is the first step of the training process) is performed to study all the aspects of training such as target learners, existing documentation, learning gaps, productivity target versus achieved, etc.

Now that we know when the seed of a training development program is sown, let's discuss about where a training development program ends.

When we talk about the end of a training development program, it should be understood as the end of one training development schedule and not training entirely. Because a business may/should identify a training need numerous times for its workforce which warrants end number of training development schedules.

We know that the training development program started with the identification of learning gap. Then, it should end after the gap is bridged. If the gap is not bridged, the training development schedule ends when the gaps in training are filled with respect to content, assessment, objectives, etc. based on the feedback received from the pilot batch after the training delivery.
